The New UTMB Health Education Center
On the strength of $22.6 million in contributions, we are embarking upon the effort to construct one of the leading venues for health care education in Texas. For more than 125 years, UTMB has pioneered new ways to train health care professionals. Once it opens in 2019, the Health Education Center will help that commitment thrive.

Texas is facing a profound shortage of health care professionals. In response, UTMB has broadened its enrollment by 40 percent over the past decade. But, with a student body that has grown beyond the limits of our existing infrastructure, the Health Education Center is a vital next step in the future of Texas health care.
Here are some specific ways in which you can help:
- Gifts of $500 will be used to support the HEC Equipment Fund.
- A gift of $1,500 will allow us to purchase an exam table.
- A gift of $3,000 will allow us to purchase an airway torso manikin.
- A gift of $5,000 will allow us to purchase a respiratory monitor.
- A gift of $7,500 will allow us to purchase a patient stretcher or an acute care bed.
- A gift of $10,000 or more will be used to support significant equipment needs for the HEC in areas to include the Women's and Children's Simluation Complex, the Standardized Patient Complex, and the Critical Care Complex.
The HEC is defined by three core principles:
Simulation, where students learn in high realism, low risk settings (using specially designed technologies) to hone their skills and master procedures before working with actual patients.
Interdisciplinary training, where students from our four schools learn together, recognizing that the best health care thrives upon a team-based approach.
Active learning, where students work together to tackle challenging cases in small group settings.
Your gift to the Health Education Center is an investment in our state’s oldest academic health center. But it’s something even more: an investment in the communities near and far, all of whom depend on our graduates for care across the lifespan—an investment in better health for a growing state.
